A lot of small business don't have the capacity to take on full time staff and generally multi-disciplinary skills are hard to come by.  My service enables the company to get a batch of work done without having to employ someone. I spent a number of years in this field collaborating on projects from fishing long-line haulers to plastic components for air quality sensors. I have also a number of years in engineering design. This taught me how to approach design from a number of different standpoints.
